About Event

With 2030 fast approaching, the challenge of global marine protection is no longer just about how much of the ocean is protected, but how effectively that protection is delivered.

Achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's target to protect and conserve at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 requires more than designation. It demands effective management, meaningful stakeholder participation, adequate resourcing, and measurable conservation outcomes.

Hosted by Fair Seas during CBD COP17, this event will bring together international experts and practitioners to explore what makes Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) work in practice.

Drawing on international experience and practical examples, the discussion will examine the challenges, opportunities and lessons for translating global commitments into effective, lasting marine protection.

Against the backdrop of Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the event will also consider how international ambitions, including the Global Biodiversity Framework and European Ocean Pact, can translate into meaningful action towards 2030.
