We will hear from Zeenat Afshan, a CSR and social sector practitioner with over 13 years of experience working with women and children in India.
What does it take to make change happen?
How do you shift deeply held beliefs - about gender, work, health and what people deserve - when those beliefs are reinforced by lived reality? How do you build agency for someone who has only ever known economic desperation? And how do you take your learnings from working with communities and turn it into programmes, policies and systems that can create change at scale?
Harmful systems can persist for generations, but they are not permanent. Decades of activism, policy and grassroots work have made change possible - millions of women and children have moved out of these broken situations. And yet, millions more remain caught in these cycles today.
For the last 13 years, Zeenat Afshan has worked across India on some of these deeply entrenched challenges. Her work has addressed child labour in Delhi and the rights of Devadasis in Karnataka, to designing programmes that train paralegals to support survivors of intimate partner violence. She has also helped establish primary healthcare centres and bridge schools for children transitioning out of dangerous working conditions.
At this meetup, we’ll hear from Zeenat about what she has learnt from working on the ground, and explore how philanthropy, CSR and policy can work together to create lasting change. There will also be plenty of time to meet and chat with others working in and around the social impact space.
