As September draws to a close, the oppressive heat of the Tokyo summer breaks into crisp evening air - or at least, should do!

"La vraie culture est ce qui reste quand on a tout oublié, et ce qui ressuscite quand la nuit tombe."

This is a nice line. While not exactly seasonal it defines culture as what remains when night falls. All the pretence is stripped away and we see people in their "natural" state.

Similarly, the transition means the colour and noise of summer is fading. Foliage is being stripped away, and only the trunk and bare branches remains.

Delphites are faced with the sobering realization that this is the essential quarter, when mistakes can be changed to glorious success and a good year can become a great year...

Dressing for the Transition - Heian Aesthetics

In the imperial Heian court, September 29 sat within the ninth month of the lunar calendar (

 - the art of layering silk combinations reflecting seasonal plants. There was only plant worthy of the occasion: the Chrysanthemum, the symbol of Japan, and the emperor's personal emblem (well, a bit later than Heian to be strictly accurate, in around 1185AD).

Court nobles wore layers pairing purple or crimson outer robes with fading green and white silk linings. This combination mirrored the blooming chrysanthemum against fading summer foliage. (See photo!)

According to the traditional East Asian solar terms, late September falls around

. the Autumnal Equinox. In the traditional agricultural calendar, this period represents the exact balance of light and darkness.

yet occurred - this is a period of fluidity and potential.
