Designing for Learner Engagement with Instructor Avatars in AI-Produced MOOC Videos

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools now enable the rapid creation of highly realistic instructional videos that can appear “indistinguishable from real humans”, yet the pedagogical implications of doing so remain underexplored. Dr. Rebecca Quintana has been experimenting with emerging AI-authoring tools to produce instructional videos for the Generative AI as a Learning Design Partner course series, aiming to support ongoing course iteration and boost learner engagement. This project takes an experimental, design-oriented approach to understanding how learning designers can meaningfully evaluate and leverage these tools while carefully considering instructional design principles, pedagogical transparency, and learner experience.
