Debugging the Real World Workshop
Spot the gaps. Shape the future.
If you’re an engineering student currently on a co-op work term, this workshop is for you.
As a future engineer, one of the most valuable skills you can develop is the ability to identify the real problem before jumping into solutions. Great engineers don’t just solve problems — they understand root causes, recognize inefficiencies, and uncover opportunities others overlook.
During your co-op, you’ve probably already caught yourself thinking:
“Why do they do it this way?”
“There has to be a better process.”
“This inefficiency probably costs a lot of time and money.”
That mindset is incredibly valuable.
Your co-op experience exposes you to real operational challenges, workplace systems, inefficiencies, and industry realities that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom. Learning how to observe, analyze, and identify meaningful problems from those experiences can become a major advantage in your engineering career.
That’s exactly why the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship created the Problem Identification Lab (PIL).
This interactive workshop is designed to help engineering students strengthen their ability to recognize high-value industry problems and think critically about systems, workflows, and user pain points.
In This Workshop, You’ll Learn How To:
Recognize when “something isn’t right” in a workplace system or process
Identify symptoms of deeper operational problems
Observe workplaces with an innovation and problem-solving mindset
Identify high-value industry pain points
Recognize inefficiencies and root causes
Think critically about workflows, systems, and user experiences
Transform workplace observations into opportunities for innovation
This workshop will help you develop one of the most important skills great engineers master: identifying the right problem.
🎁 Plus, students who attend will be entered for a chance to win $150.
📅 Date: June 11
⏰ Time: 4:30pm NDT
