Hike to Galaun/Riederstein + (optional) Swim in Tegernsee
Hike to Galaun/Riederstein + (optional) Swim in Tegernsee
Note the changed starting time and departure platform!
Due to thunderstorm risks, we had to change our Herzogstand/Walchensee itinerary and departure time. The goal is now to do the hike before the weather might change for the worst.
Join us for a classic summer day in the Bavarian Alps: a hike up Galaun (and if we are fast enough, up to Riederstein) followed by an optional, refreshing swim in Lake Tegernsee!
📍 Meeting Point: Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), at the start of the platform for the RB57 (86957) train to Tegernsee.
🗓️ When: Saturday, 1 August, at 7:45 AM (train departs at 8:02 AM).
👤 Host: Alexander
🥾 Elevation gain: 440m; hiking time: 3-3.5h
The hike is moderately challenging, but the goal is for everyone to enjoy it, not to arrive at the destination at sharp o’clock. No one gets hurried, no one is left behind. Avoiding storms is a higher priority than reaching the summit - if we can't make it, we turn back and chill by the lake.
Plan:
We'll meet at Munich central station at 7:45 am and take the regional train RB57 (86957) to Tegernsee at 8:02am.
Exact meeting point: beginning of the platform of the train towards Tegernsee - don't be late.
We will get off the train at Tegernsee and walk to the trailhead (which should take around 15 min)
From there we'll hike a forested trail to Galaun.
If there is enough time before storms, then without stopping at Galaun, we will continue toward Riederstein (if not, we turn back)
The hike ends back in Tegernsee where we can swim/go to restaurants/walk on the promenade
A picnic break is not planned until we reach the end of the hike
Note that the lake is very deep, and even at the height of summer the water can be quite cold.
Return to Munich is by the same train (last departure is at 10:52pm)
Prerequisites & What to bring
Fitness & gear: you need good fitness, sure-footedness for steep/rocky trails, and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support.
Water & snacks: bring enough to last you until we reach restaurants at about 12:30 PM.
Swimming: you must be a confident swimmer if you plan to swim in the lake.
Cash/card: if you plan to buy food at Tegernsee/dine at restaurants
