Doing What I Came to Do: Clarifying Your Assignment
“Are you on purpose or off purpose?”
-Clyde Eliot Gumbs
"I am who I am doing what I came to do."
-Audre Lorde
When I was a teenager my grandfather explained his decision to work for himself. “Alexis, I work too damn hard to work for somebody else.” I understood this to be his logic around becoming an entrepreneur and business owner after he left the army.
But now, as I watch so many of the people I admire in the whirlwind of communities in crisis and floundering institutions, I realize that he was also teaching me something about the difference between purpose and reaction. In the times we are facing we have the opportunity to take full responsibility for our impact whether we are transforming institutions or building new ones.
This two hour virtual workshop is a supportive community space to tangibly clarify and express your priorities in this lifetime on your own terms. Drawing on ancestral guides, from my family of origin and my chosen pantheon of Black Feminist exemplars we will write, listen and dream together. Most importantly, we will hold ourselves accountable.
This practice, when fully engaged, will allow you to turn toward purpose and move toward it.
