The Hidden Impact of Noise on Early Learning
ISEY (Institute for the Science of Early Years and Youth) are hosting a special policy forum at the Nuffield Foundation on one of the most overlooked forces shaping early learning: noise.
We’re raising children in a world increasingly filled with noise. Early years settings are no exception. But the evidence is clear: higher noise levels are linked to poorer language and literacy development, and to difficulties with behaviour and emotional regulation. Despite this, noise remains largely invisible in early years policy and awareness amongst practitioners is low. This event puts it centre stage.
At this event, we will share:
What the research really says about noise and early communication
Why this matters now for practice and policy
Practical, low-cost steps to reduce noise and its negative impact
We’ll also present our current Nuffield Foundation-funded project on noise and disadvantage. Expect short, focused talks and discussions followed by light refreshments, and the chance to connect with colleagues across research, practice, and policy.
This is for anyone working at the intersection of developmental science, early years practice, and education policy - and looking for clear, evidence-informed ways to improve outcomes for young children.
Date: Tuesday 2 June
