Potential Space : D. W. Winnicott Study Group
A Winnicott study group, reading slowly in the order he wrote.
Winnicott is often encountered in fragments: a phrase about the good-enough mother, a reference to the transitional object, a line quoted in supervision. This study group offers something different. We read his work from the beginning, paper by paper, in the order it was written, allowing each text the time it asks for, and following his thought as it developed from pediatric observation to a theory of psychoanalytic treatment itself.
For psychoanalysts and candidates, he offers a way to hear the infant within the adult, and to understand how deeply the earliest years of care shape who we become.
Format
One paper or chapter each week, read closely. Discussion is open and associative, with room for clinical material and no written assignments: a holding environment for thought.
Who should attend
Psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, clinicians in psychodynamic practice, and candidates in psychoanalytic training. Prior familiarity with Winnicott is welcome but not required.
