Meetup 02 - At the Edge of the World
We’re living through a turning point — new technologies like AI are transforming not just work and creativity, but how we see ourselves and live with each other.
Join us for the second meetup at the Edge of the World — a gathering for makers, activists, researchers, thinkers, builders, and curious others.
This week we'll start with a 15 minute freestyle talk by Dan about automation and power. Pitch “My colleague David Duvenaud has made the claim that automation of labour by major tech providers will destroy the bargaining power that has made democracy feasibly in any sense. He also argues that action based around organising citizens using technology provides a path to potentially better outcomes, but that the window to use those tools is short. Here is a podcast he appears on about it: https://overcast.fm/+ABN0762vCmg”
These meetups aim to build a community concerned and interested about the impacts and potential of emerging technologies such as AI. Between the meetups, we hope that participants will host activities, such as increasing awareness of AI, teach/share knowledge about alternatives, reimagine positive emerging tech possibilities, and plot ways to resist big tech.
At the Edge of World is not ideologically or politically aligned; we welcome people who are prepared to engage with one another with respect and curiosity.
