CEO Speaker Series — "What the Utah Story Leaves Out" with Melanie Jones of Sego Leadership
If a Utah company wanted to be written about, the pitch landed on Melanie Jones's desk. As editor-in-chief of Utah Business she read them all, judged the lists, and sat through the panels. Before that came decades inside an operating company at Ultradent, and a run as chief of staff at Younique.
Today she runs Sego Leadership, which spent eleven years as the Women's Leadership Institute of Utah before relaunching under the new name last month. 1,400 women, 100 companies, eleven counties.
This session turns that vantage point back on the room. What's real about the Utah business story and what's marketing. What the tech-and-startup narrative leaves out about the companies that actually employ this state. What operators here get wrong, repeatedly, on stages she has sat through. And the one that's harder to say out loud: WalletHub has ranked Utah last in the country for women's equality for more than a decade, and Sego's premise is that the state's economy depends on moving it. Everyone in this room hires, promotes and sets culture, so we'll keep that question practical. Then the lighter end of it, including the best interview she ever ran and the worst business advice she's heard repeated on a Utah stage.
