Dr. Daniel Grindle, Northeastern University

Every crash test dummy, every airbag, every seatbelt click you've ever heard traces back to a science most people never think about: predicting exactly how a human body breaks. Since WWII, engineers have been building smarter and smarter ways to simulate the moment of impact, long before it ever happens on the road.

In this talk, Dr. Daniel Grindle takes us from the earliest crash sleds to today's digital human bodies, virtual test subjects made entirely of code that can be crashed, bent, and studied a thousand times over without a single bruise.

Topics include:

Why WWII-era crash testing kicked off a decades-long arms race for safer cars

How finite element analysis lets engineers build digital humans and simulate injury down to the bone

A real case study on seated pedestrian impacts, and what it reveals about who's most at risk on the road

What "predicting injury" actually looks like when it's happening inside a computer instead of on a test track

About the Speaker

Dr. Daniel Grindle is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Bioengineering at Northeastern University, where he teaches biomechanics and researches how finite element models can protect the human body in vehicle collisions, from seated pedestrians to e-scooter riders. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech.
