THE PROBLEM
In these polarized times, the relationships that matter to us feel especially precious... and fragile. The risk of losing them can paralyze us when conflict arises, afraid to say anything just in case we mess up.
Here's what I've learned: in that moment, be a moderator. I don't mean being politically "moderate": I mean asking questions, listening assertively, defaulting to empathy, understanding your own thinking, and seeing connection as its own reward.

ABOUT YOUR TRAINER
Hey there! I'm Joshua Johnson, and I'll be your trainer for this course.
Before joining The Onion, I spent 25 years in broadcasting: at local stations, on NPR and at NBC News. I earned a reputation for handling tough conversations with decency, integrity and courage.
It transformed me from a host/anchor into a Moderator, equipping me to handle just about anyone in almost any situation without worry. Often the other person came away stunned at how well things went!
I poured some of my insights in to my 2026 TED Talk, “Idiots Are Everywhere”, which got 100,000 views in its first week. People clearly want help navigating conflict from someone who knows.
And yes, I think of myself as a trainer and a coach rather than an "instructor". Communication skills get stronger with use. My job is to help you build those muscles in a safe, positive environment.
