NKATA IGBO PANEL DISCUSSION EDITION 3 - RELIGION AND IGBO CULTURE: BETWEEN FAITH, IDENTITY AND TRADITION
Can we embrace our faith without losing our cultural identity?
Religion and culture are powerful forces that shape who we are, what we believe, how we live, and the values we pass on to the next generation.
Among the Igbo, the relationship between Christianity, traditional religious practices, and indigenous cultural institutions has generated important conversations about identity, heritage, belonging, and the preservation of our traditions.
Some cultural practices have been abandoned in the name of religion. Others have been misunderstood, misrepresented, or labelled incompatible with religious beliefs. At the same time, many continue to ask an important question: How can we honour our faith while preserving the valuable aspects of our cultural heritage?
Where do we draw the line between faith and culture? Are we preserving our identity, or gradually losing parts of it?
For the third edition of the Nkata Igbo Panel Discussion, we invite you to join an engaging, thought-provoking, and respectful conversation exploring the complex relationship between religion and Igbo culture.
This is an opportunity to listen to diverse perspectives, question long-held assumptions, deepen our understanding, and reflect on the kind of cultural future we want to build.
TOPICS WE WILL EXPLORE
Is Igbo culture compatible with Christianity and other religious beliefs?
How has Christianity influenced the preservation or erosion of Igbo traditions?
Are some Igbo cultural practices misunderstood or wrongly classified as incompatible with religion?
Where should we draw the line between cultural practices and religious beliefs?
Are we gradually losing our cultural identity in the name of religion?
What roles should traditional institutions, religious leaders, and families play in preserving Igbo heritage?
How can younger generations embrace their religious beliefs without losing touch with their cultural roots?
