Ubipoly: Monopoly with a Universal Basic Income twist
What would happen if from tomorrow on Finland would give you regular and unconditional payments known as Universal Basic Income?
How would it affect your spending, saving, and financial planning? And what about your neighbours, friends, and colleagues?
Join us for a game night exploring it together through a practical simulation. 🤩 Sustainability Community Finland is teaming up with Elisabet Miheludaki, a PhD researcher at the University of Helsinki, to play Ubipoly, a version of Monopoly she developed around a taxable Universal Basic Income (UBI).
How it works:
Before the start, you fill in a very short anonymous survey about UBI. We introduce the game and explain the rules. You draw a card assigning you a random socio-economic profile, and you play the whole game as that person.
Round 1: a regular round of Monopoly.
Round 2: UBI is introduced and gives you new options to play. The game ends and you fill in a short survey once more.
Break
Afterwards, we have a relaxed chat about what you noticed. Share what surprised you, ask questions, or disagree. Different views are welcome and we will ensure the conversation stays friendly and respectful.
The UBI amount and player profiles are based on modelling from Elisabet’s PhD research.
Why come?
Sustainability work often means engaging with lives and experiences that aren’t our own. Ubipoly is a playful way to step into someone else’s shoes, see what comes up, and swap perspectives with a friendly crowd over a board game.
Good to know:
Neither prior knowledge nor a formed opinion on the topic is required, just your curiosity. This game is organised for you to try the model out for yourself and take away whatever conclusions feel right to you. 💪
Maximum 10 players. Please cancel in advance if you can’t make it, so someone else can take your spot. The game only works with a full table.
The whole evening takes about 2 hours, including the introduction, two surveys, the game, a break, and the discussion. Survey responses are further anonymised and may be used for future research and publications on UBI perceptions. No Monopoly experience needed. We’ll explain the rules on the spot.
When: November 27, 17:45-20:00
Place: Helsinki Central Library Oodi, 2nd floor, Room 8 (Ryhmätila 8). Töölönlahdenkatu 4, 00100 Helsinki
