Atlantic Return is a slow-paced cultural retreat for people of African descent who feel called to reconnect with African land, Atlantic histories, music, community and themselves.
Across Santiago and Fogo, we move beyond the usual Cabo Verde beach holiday. We explore the islands through Kriolu language, migration, colonial memory, local music, agriculture, volcanic landscapes and everyday community life.
There is time to learn and connect, but also time to sleep in, swim, wander alone or simply do nothing.
Some experiences are shared. Others offer a choice between cultural immersion, active exploration and rest.
You do not need to have Cape Verdean roots to join. This is not a promise of direct ancestral return, but an invitation to explore what returning to African soil can mean when diaspora, identity and belonging are complex.
The journey
Day 1 — Inland Santiago
Arrive on Santiago and travel into the island’s peaceful mountain interior.
We begin with a curated Cape Verdean welcome dinner, intimate local music and our first introduction to Kriolu language and culture.
Day 2 — Cidade Velha
After a slow morning, we visit historic Cidade Velha.
Explore the fortress, historic streets and stories of African presence, colonial expansion, resistance and Creole identity.
During a locally hosted grogue tasting, we learn more about Kriolu language, Cape Verdean culture, migration and everyday island life.
Travellers who want more movement can join an optional hike towards the baobab tree. We end with a shared dinner near Cidade Velha before returning inland.
Day 3 — Movement, culture or rest
Choose the rhythm that suits you.
Join a guided hike through Santiago’s mountain landscapes, enjoy a slow morning at the accommodation or take part in an optional cultural afternoon in Praia with local artists and musicians.
We reunite for a shared dinner inland.
Day 4 — Travel to Fogo
Fly from Santiago to Fogo.
After a short welcome walk through São Filipe and a shared local lunch, we travel upwards into the volcanic community of Chã das Caldeiras.
We settle in beneath Pico do Fogo and share dinner inside the caldera.
Day 5 — Chã community and volcanic wine
Enjoy a relaxed morning in the volcanic landscape.
Later, we walk to local vineyards and spend time with farmers and community winemakers.
Learn how grapes are cultivated in volcanic soil, hear stories of eruption and rebuilding, taste locally produced wine and share food, music and conversation with community hosts.
Day 6 — Volcano or agriculture
Active travellers can begin early with a guided Pico do Fogo hike or a shorter volcanic route.
Those seeking a slower experience can rest in the morning and later join a community-rooted agriculture and coffee experience with local farmers and producers.
We reunite for dinner and stargazing beneath the volcano.
Day 7 — Tarrafal
Return to Santiago and travel north to Tarrafal.
The rest of the day is completely free for the beach, swimming, sleep, solo exploration or cafés.
A shared dinner may be offered, but travellers are equally welcome to retreat and enjoy the evening independently.
Day 8 — Assomada and the East Coast
Begin with another slow morning.
In the afternoon, we travel to Assomada for a short cultural introduction, market visit and time for shopping.
We continue towards the East Coast for beach or waterfront time, followed by a shared coastal dinner.
Day 9 — Ocean, memory or rest
Choose what you need.
Join an optional locally hosted boat and cave experience, visit the former Tarrafal Concentration Camp with local historical context, or enjoy a completely free day.
In the evening, we reunite for our closing circle and farewell dinner with local music.
Day 10 — Departure
Breakfast and group transfer to Praia International Airport.
Travellers continuing to São Vicente and Santo Antão may join an optional extension.
