Lunch & Learn: UBC’s Updated Express License Agreement & IP Licensing for Spin-offs
Join us for a Lunch and Learn with Brett Sharp, Associate Director, Technology Transfer, to learn how intellectual property (IP) licensing works when launching a UBC spin-off and how UBC’s updated Express License Agreement (ELA) can simplify the process.
Brett will break down what the Express License Agreement (ELA) is, what's new, and how it enables UBC researchers to license UBC intellectual property into a new venture. The session will also cover key IP licensing concepts researchers should understand when commercializing UBC technologies, including exclusivity, sublicensing, retained university rights, and commercialization obligations.
Lunch will be provided, come with your questions.
Who is this event for
This event is for current and alumni Venture Founder participants, HATCH companies, and any UBC researcher who wants to learn more about intellectual property licensing and the role of the ELA in creating a UBC spin-off.
It's not open to the public, and space is limited, so registration is subject to approval.

This event will be hosted in Innovation UBC’s office on the Vancouver Point Grey campus.
About UBC’s Express License Agreement (ELA)
UBC’s Express License Agreement is a standardized intellectual property licensing agreement designed to make it faster and simpler for UBC researchers to launch spin-off companies based on UBC technologies.
Through the ELA, an eligible spin-off can obtain exclusive, worldwide rights to commercialize and sublicense specified UBC intellectual property without negotiating a fully bespoke license agreement. UBC retains rights to use the technology for research, teaching and other institutional purposes.
