About Event

Wedgemount Lake is one of the most rewarding hikes in Garibaldi Provincial Park, and one of the toughest. You climb hard through the forest, scramble the last stretch, and then the trees open up to a glacier-fed turquoise lake sitting under Wedgemount Glacier and a wall of snow-capped peaks. It is the kind of view that makes the burn in your legs feel worth it.

We are heading up on Sunday, August 16. Everyone is welcome, and this is a free event. Most people who join our hikes come solo, so if you are showing up on your own you will be in good company.

Fair warning: this one is rated Hard, and it earns that rating. Please come prepared.

The Hike

Trail: Wedgemount Lake and Tupper Lake, Garibaldi Provincial Park

Distance: 14 km, out and back

Elevation gain: 1,353 m

Difficulty: Hard

Rating: 4.7 stars from over 4,100 reviews

Terrain: forest, rocky trail, a scramble section, alpine lake

What to Expect

Experienced hikers get in and out in under six hours. Plan for a long day either way.

The trail mixes steep climbing with flatter stretches. In the steep parts there are plenty of roots and rocks that act as natural steps.

Most of the climb is under forest cover, which helps a lot on a warm August day.

There is a fun scramble right before the lake, with snow-capped mountains behind you as you finish it.

The last 45 minutes is the hardest part. It gets much steeper, the terrain is loose, and it can be slippery.

The descent needs attention too. Loose rock is the main hazard on the way down.

Hiking poles are highly recommended, especially for that final kilometre.

Bring bug spray and more water than you think you need.

This is a self-guided group hike. We stay together as a group where we can, and everyone hikes at a pace that is safe for them.

Who This Is For

Hikers with some experience and decent fitness who want a real challenge and a huge payoff at the top. Great for people looking to meet others who take their hiking seriously, solo attendees, and anyone chasing one of the best alpine views in the Sea to Sky. This is not a beginner hike, so if it is your first big climb, please be honest with yourself about it.

Cost

This is a free event. There is no ticket price and nothing to send us.

Transportation and Carpool

We will be carpooling to the location and splitting fuel costs, so you can join us even if you do not have a car. Carpool will be decided in the event WhatsApp group once your registration is confirmed. Fuel split is between you and your driver and is separate from the event, which is free.

One thing to know: the access road up to the trailhead is known to be rough in the warmer months, and high-clearance vehicles are recommended. We will sort out which vehicles are best suited for the drive in the WhatsApp group.

What to Bring

At least 2 to 3 litres of water

Proper hiking shoes or boots with good grip

Hiking poles

Important Notes

We meet in Vancouver at 6:00 am and carpool up together. The exact meeting point will be shared in the WhatsApp group. We leave on time, so please arrive a few minutes early.

Expected return: around 6:00 pm, depending on group pace and traffic.

This hike is rated Hard. Please only register if you are comfortable with 14 km and 1,353 m of climbing.

The plan is weather dependent and the schedule may change. We will keep everyone updated in the WhatsApp group.

Your spot is confirmed once we approve your registration.

Check current trail and park conditions, including any access or day-use requirements, before the day of the hike.

Come climb something hard with good people and eat lunch beside a glacier. See you on the trail.
