Esports Workshop: Intro to Fighting Games through the Lens of Smash Bros Melee
Are you interested in learning about fighting games, but not sure how to start? This is the perfect place. My name is Kevin Dhir, and I have been playing fighting games for as long as I can remember.
I am a high-level competitor in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and am the organizer of Battle of BC, an international major-scale fighting game event at the Vancouver Convention Centre. I am also an educator at Bow Valley College, developing a course on esports event management for their esports business diploma program.
It is a lifelong mission for me to build and develop the fighting games ecosystem here in Canada. I'd love to introduce more people to fighting games! Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of the best games of all time for a myriad of reasons, and serves as a great example to use to teach students the fundamentals of the fighting game genre that can apply to any game.
The workshop will be a mixture of lecturing, hands-on training, and conclude with a tournament.
Learning Outcomes:
Become familiar with the fundamental concepts of fighting games
Learn the formats and structure of fighting game tournaments
Be able to play a tournament format match of Super Smash Bros. Melee
You do not need any prior experience. This class is intended for complete beginners. All you need to bring is an open mind, and perhaps a way to take notes whether it's on your phone or in a notebook. It will help you when you're trying to play.
This event is by donation, as it is a pilot project. The money will go towards the storage locker rental that we store all of the Galint CRT & Monitor Vault in for our events.
This event will be cancelled if we have less than 8 participants by the day prior.
I will have 8 Smash Bros. Melee Setups, and 16 controllers available to borrow. If you have your own GameCube Controller, I encourage you to bring it.
