Journocoders: Exploratory data graphics with Altair
This month we'll be learning how to explore data with charts and graphics using Altair.
Altair is a Python library for building a wide range of graphics and charts using a powerful and concise grammar. This grammar allows you to express links between your data and how that data should be shown visually — unlike some other tools where you have to specify how to implement the visualisation in terms of drawing commands. Instead, Altair figures out how to draw the chart for you.
This speed makes Altair great for quickly exploring data, though it could also be used for creating charts for readers.
In this session we'll be following a tutorial that starts with how to create simple charts with Altair, then how to layer up elements to create more complex charts, transform your data, and include interactivity. We'll also cover how to create maps for your geographical data.
All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event.
