The Mahjong Project with author Nicole Wong - Book Talk Registration & Priority on Mahjong Play
Join Emerald City Tile Club and the Seattle Chinatown Book Club at the Little Saigon Creative on September 26th (Friday) for a discussion with author Nicole Wong on her book Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora! The book talk will be 6-7pm, followed by 2 hours of social mahjong play, 7-9pm. RSVP is required for the book talk portion, so please use this Luma link to RSVP!
Social mahjong play will feature book signing opportunities, food from Quiet Child, drink from Spin Drip Cafe, and a DJ to cap it off!
Nicole's book talk will discuss a general overview/introduction of Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora, themes within the book and the game of mahjong (connection, community, etc.), the history of the game, Nicole's experience writing the book, her inspirations for writing, and more! Books will be available at the event to look through and for sale in a limited quantity. Nicole will also be available for book signings and to chat during the social play hours after the book talk is over, so you won't want to miss it!
Nicole's book was published just this past April of 2025! She's visiting Seattle to discuss her book with our local community and to promote unity the mahjong! Here's a description of the book taken from Nicole's website, the mahjongproject.com:
With vibrant photography and detailed instructional diagrams, author Nicole Wong walks you through gameplay, just how her grandfather would have. In addition, Mahjong delves into the strategy, history, and design of the game and discusses various popular styles of play (American mah-jongg, Japanese riichi mahjong, and more). A bonus essay also breaks down the mahjong hands in the pivotal scene from the 2018 hit film Crazy Rich Asians, and snippets of the author's family history are sprinkled throughout, telling a story of diaspora through mahjong and showcasing mahjong culture, past and present.
