As foreign bureaus continue to shrink and more journalists are working independently, there are fewer traditional pathways for reporters to gain international reporting experience. At the same time, many journalists — particularly students, recent graduates, and early-career reporters — are eager to report internationally, but may not know how to get started. Furthermore, journalists may find it difficult to navigate the many challenges and risks of reporting abroad.

This workshop would offer practical guidance for journalists interested in reporting overseas (with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region and African countries). Through a conversation with experienced international reporters, participants would learn how to identify stories, build sources and local networks, pitch editors from abroad, and navigate the logistical and professional challenges and risks of reporting abroad.
