Till Death Do Us Part: Death & Emergency Planning for the Gays and Theys
About this workshop
Workshop recording & presentation materials will be provided following the workshop to all who RSVP!
One of the most obnoxious forms of preparing for an emergency is legal paperwork. As scary, intimidating or challenging as thinking and planning for one’s death or incapacity might feel, it can be a lot less so when we plan ahead and prepare with the people we love <3
This Valentines season, we want you to feel secure in knowing your loved ones and chosen family have the paperwork they need to support your wishes in an emergency.
Especially as queer and trans people who often have estranged family, there is certain paperwork we should have in place to prepare for the big D (death). Let’s ensure that what happens in death is our choice, not our parents' or the state's. This paperwork is important for all people, queer and trans alike, whether you have supportive bio family or not.
Join queer attorneys Rachel and Lyla, founders of the law firm femme & femme LLP, for a workshop reviewing the four main documents necessary when preparing for emergencies (including death, incapacity & incarceration):
Advanced health care directives (sometimes improperly called Living Wills)
Wills
Powers of attorney
Revocable Trusts
This event will be focused on the intricacies of California law; however, all are welcome as these four documents have parallels for every state. We will note when something is specific to CA law, and if you'll need to do further research for your specific state! The workshop will consist of a presentation followed by Q&A. Recording & presentation materials will be provided following the workshop.
Bring your bestie! Your lover! Your polycule! Your sibling! Bring yourself! Show yourself/loved ones you care this Valentine's season by planning for death. <3

Our work is grounded in the belief that our personal and collective healing are interdependent. We want our work to build towards accessible collective care and the of undoing scarcity, greed, and capitalism.
We also recognize that although we do our best to resist and to exist beyond capitalism, we live in and are impacted by it. We use a sliding scale and ask you to determine where you fall on it. For those of you with inherited wealth and class privilege, please consider paying at high end of our sliding scale. This directly supports us to offer reduced and pro bono access.
For those of you who are struggling to make ends meet due to daily, systemic, and inherited impacts of racism, transphobia, ableism, classism, and other oppression, you are invited to pay at the lower end.
We have found that white folks in particular seem to struggle with self-assessment, if more guidance would be helpful please check out this quiz to help determine your suggested rate!
