Seed Exchange + Seed Starting Workshop
Don't let the snow fool you, spring is coming soon! Some plants are beginning to roll around under the covers, getting ready to break their dormancy and emerge anew. And for some of us, it's high time to start some seeds indoors.
Come visit the tables of the Astoria Food Pantry to forage for seeds for your community garden/apartment/rooftop/tree pit this year! If you have seeds to share, please bring them (extra points if you've saved seeds from your own plants)! This is a great opportunity to try growing new plants, meet other plant people, hear seed stories, and learn something new.
From 4pm-5:30 (loosely), Seb will teach a kind of rolling workshop about how to start seeds of all sorts, particularly veggies and medicinal herbs. We'll have some seed starting materials here.
We have a new 3-tier seed starting grow rack at AFP (rescued in perfect condition from a high school trash pile)! Part of the workshop will be sowing many seeds in trays to germinate in this rack. The seedlings will be given out at our 3rd annual seedling exchange in April or May (date tbd).
We also are starting a free herbal apothecary at AFP this year. Many of the seeds we'll be starting are medicinal herbs. The hope is that you and other local plant people can grow them out, harvest and dry them and bring them back to add to the apothecary (and to use yourself of course).
The seeds are free! The workshop is free! If you want to support Seb's work, feel free to make a donation. You can do that by bringing some cash or Venmo-ing Seb at @sebbouknight. Thanks!
This event is at the Astoria Food Pantry (25-82 Steinway St, Astoria, NY). AFP requires masking inside the space.
