Career Planning Workshop:
If positive impact is what you're looking for with your career, choosing the right career is the most ethical decision you could make.

Even if not, given that you'll spend about 80k hours in your work, it is worth making it enjoyable

This workshop will use a curriculum tried-and-tested by groups in Germany, based on research (published in book form too) by the specialised organisation 80,000 hours. I can also incorporate elements from the most popular career book around "What Colour is Your Parachute" and another career workgroup I took part in.

First, there's the important but somewhat intense stuff: you'll come out of the five sessions with actionable plans A, B & Z, accountability partners, a set of review points, and peer support.

But then there's also more inspiring learnings: reading about what meta-analyses say are factors for fulfilling jobs, debunking commonly held myths in the process (e.g. passion can let us down). You'll gain clarity about your strengths and exactly how they apply to every single domain of impact ("cause areas").

There are some fascinating cause areas to work on which are rated the most important yet are also extremely inspiring to work on. These come close to fiction, works of philosophy or harken back to great historic events (AI sentience? Decoding animal communication? Bringing about a movement as powerful as slavery abolition?). These areas could do with more people with any existing or prospective skillsets, background/education, given how new they are.

Curriculum:

Week 1

Personal priorities & starting point

  • Get introduced to the group & programme content.

  • Collect your personal priorities for a fulfilling job.

  • Explore your existing skills and advantages.

Week 2

Cause area exploration

  • Present 4 global problem areas, and discuss them in the group.

  • Use the scale, tractability, neglectedness framework in your analysis.

  • Brainstorm first ideas how you could contribute to solving one of these problems.

Week 3

Career Paths

  • Explore which of your strengths and weaknesses are relevant to a problem area.

  • Collect possible paths towards impactful action.

  • Find opportunities where your skillset might shine in those areas.

Week 4

Draft your plan

  • Develop a first draft of your main career plan, aimed at contributing to the solution of a large global problem.

  • Set SMART goals to put yourself on a path that allows you to achieve this plan.

  • Receive feedback and accountability for your goal setting.

Week 5

Backup plans & dealing with uncertainty

  • Come up with ideas for your plan B and plan Z.

  • Get group input and investigate key uncertainties.

  • Develop actionable steps to reduce these uncertainties.

For what it's worth, one of us organisers has founded an association and the other has been leading a research group. We've both hosted multiple workshops like this before!

Looking forward to meeting you 😊
