Super Supper: We Still Haven’t Figured Out Who Owns This
The early-stage operator hire in the age of AI agents
Most founders don’t agonise over whether to hire an operator or build better systems. They know they need both. The problem is the order. There’s almost no shared language between founders for how to make those calls.
Which blindspots actually need a human? Where does execution suffer from not having someone who owns it? And what, frankly, just needed a better process?
The brief for an early-stage non-technical hire has always been the same: handle the things slowing us down. But that list looks very different in 2026. AI agents can run the research, manage the inbox, track the pipeline, draft the update. So when you finally bring in an operator, what are you actually buying — someone to run the tools, or someone to reshape how decisions get made?
We want to hear from the operators too. If you’re a Chief of Staff, COO, or senior operator at an early-stage startup: what do you unlock that a founder couldn’t automate? What’s your proven blind spot and how is it changing?
Expect candid stories, uncomfortable answers, and at least one person who hired the wrong thing in the wrong order.
What's Cooking
Our returning MasterChef is Alan Tang: accountant turned chef (!) turned social entrepreneur. Alan now creates experiences for children through CoLab and works with startups as a fractional Chief of Staff and operator. For his second turn at the Super Supper stove, he’s taking us in a Middle Eastern direction, a nod to his first chef stint at Honey & Co.
We’ll cook together, discuss over dinner. Expect sleeves rolled up in both halves of the evening.
