We are honoured to welcome Gareth Thomas CBE for a unique evening with the British and Commonwealth community and everyone who loves sport in Rio de Janeiro.
Who is Gareth Thomas
Few athletes carry a story like his. One hundred caps for Wales, captain of the British & Irish Lions, Heineken Cup winner with Toulouse, and the third-highest try scorer in Welsh rugby history. But it was off the pitch that Gareth became one of the most admired figures in world sport.
In 2009, he became the first professional male athlete in team sports to come out as gay while still playing. In 2019, he shared publicly that he was living with HIV: an act of courage that transformed the global conversation around the condition and the stigma surrounding it. In 2020, he was awarded the CBE for services to sport and health.
His journey is a lesson in resilience: the idea that strength isn't something you're born with, but something you build along the way.
What to expect
An open and honest conversation, in which Gareth will speak about identity, courage, his life in rugby, the power of sport to change behaviour, and the work he leads through Tackle HIV. The evening will close with audience questions and a meet & greet with Gareth.

Poucos atletas carregam uma história como a dele. Mas foi fora de campo que Gareth se tornou uma das figuras mais admiradas do esporte mundial.
Em 2009, tornou-se o primeiro atleta profissional em esportes coletivos a se assumir gay ainda em atividade. Em 2019, revelou publicamente viver com HIV: um ato de coragem que transformou a conversa global sobre o tema e sobre o estigma que o cerca. Em 2020, foi condecorado como Comendador do Império Britânico (CBE) por serviços ao esporte e à saúde.
Sua trajetória é uma lição sobre resiliência: a ideia de que a força não nasce com a gente, mas se constrói na jornada.
