From Recordings to Annotations: The Evolution of xeno-canto and a Demo of Spectrolipi for Bioacoustics
IEN Research Spotlights are community events hosted by the India Ecoacoustics Network (IEN), where we highlight works of researchers who employ acoustics to explore and understand their environments. These sessions are free and open to join for anyone with an interest in ecoacoustics and environmental research.
We invite you to the 23rd IEN Research Spotlight featuring Willem-Pier and Nishant Bhagwat.
About the talk:
xeno-canto is a fantastic community resource for archiving and sharing sounds of wildlife. Now 21 years old and with more than 1,000,000 recordings, it continues to grow in some amazing ways. Now it supports recordings from across the tree of life, including bats, primates, insects, amphibians, birds and more.
This spotlight talk is dedicated to sharing another exciting update from the team. Annotations are now a core part of xeno-canto! We welcome Willem-Pier Vellinga, the xeno-canto co-founder and admin, to share more about this exciting update. Willem-Pier will take us on a quick tour through the history of xeno-canto, and then share about its new functionalities. The second part of the talk will be a demonstration of and introduction to the features of the annotation tool by Nishant Bhagwat, the creator of the Spectrolipi annotation platform.
About the speakers:
Willem-Pier Vellinga is a materials scientist by training and the co-founder and admin of xeno-canto.org, a trailblazing citizen-science platform where recordists around the world archive, share, and curate sounds of the natural world.
Nishant Bhagwat is a mechanical engineer with a career spanning aerospace, manufacturing, IT, and enterprise systems. A passionate birder and nature enthusiast, he brings his technical expertise to developing open-source tools and machine-learning workflows for ecological monitoring and bioacoustics, including Spectrolipi, a tool for annotating sounds.
