About Event

Songs from an Overgrown Utopia

is an evening length work evoking flora, fauna, and the intensity of weather/atmosphere. Through 4 movements, audiences will be transported to different worlds, ways of beings, and emotional landscapes.

These are spacious electro-acoustic soundings, a collaboration between the ever-spontaneous Aviary Ensemble of Philadelphia and the immersive collage of Shinya Lin. The goal is simple, to transport you into other worlds and ways of being.

BORBS is quartet of multi-instrumentalists dedicated to the birds in their awe inspiring nature, their terror, their beauty. This band utilizes sound schemas, gesture-codes, and light compositional thoughts as an organizing operandi. The sonic world is a mythical transduction of our ever-depleting/degrading/transforming natural spaces.

Max Englemen- Electric Guitar, Melodica, Bassoon Gong,

Shinya Lin is a performer, composer, and improviser dedicated to exploring the connections between music, life, and human connection. As a co-founder of Chaospace, a nonprofit organization supporting the curation of Asian artists in New York City, Shinya actively fosters creative collaboration and cultural exchange. His current compositional research focuses on life-informed, gestural, and ubiquitous music, drawing inspiration from the sounds of everyday life and nature. Shinya's diverse musical style spans genres such as new music, jazz, improvisation, and electroacoustic music. A pianist specializing in prepared piano and electronics, he draws deeply from the influences of John Cage and Cecil Taylor, embracing spontaneity and the joy of discovery within the soundscape of life. Shinya emphasizes the importance of "being present" in his music, viewing it as inseparable from ordinary life. He believes music brings people together, fostering natural connections and revealing life’s deeper purposes. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Shinya holds a Master of Music degree from The New School’s Performer-Composer program where he currently serves as part-time faculty. Now based in New York, he continues to forge a creative path, collaborating with various art communities to explore and expand the possibilities of contemporary music
