The hidden economics of growing healthcare businesses
For anyone building, running or backing a private healthcare business, including clinic and occupational health owners scaling beyond their first site, people inside larger provider groups, investors and advisers, and anyone curious about how private healthcare really makes its money.
Growth in private healthcare always adds complexity. A second site, a big employer contract, another insurer, a new service line or an acquisition each brings news rules about what’s billable and how. At a single clinic that might be admin creeping up and at a large group its likely sites, systems and contracts that never quite sync up.
The usual advice is to simplify, i.e. cut services, pick a niche, standardise on one platform, but in private healthcare that advice can really cost you. The contracts, payers and services that make a business complex are often the same things that build the profit line, and so strapping them out can easily simplify away your margin.
We’re pressure testing that idea with a provider that’s traversed the journey, an M&A adviser who knows how buyers and investors value private health businesses, and Cority Meddbase, who work with growing clinic and provider groups on care delivery and commercial models.
You’ll leave knowing where complexity is earning its keep, where systems are eating into profit, and what investors look for when they value a provider that has scaled.
