Winter Book Club: Caliban and the Witch @ Flower Cat
A monthly book club discussing Silvia Federici's "Caliban and the Witch" chapter by chapter, month by month, from December-April.
This book (though I haven't read it) has been swirling my orbit for years. I've been yearning to invite others into the experience of reading it, marinating in it and discussing it. The little I know about it, to me, calls for exploration within community.
Here is a passage from the book that I found relevant to my interest that was shared in "Magic Maker" by Pam Grossman on the topic of having and using mystic or natural widsom:
Eradicating these practices was a necessary condition for the capitalist rationalization of work, since magic appeared as an illicit form off power and and instrument to obtain what one wanted without work, that is, a refusal of work in action. "Magic kills industry," lamented Francis Bacon, admitting that nothing repelled him so much as the assumption that one could obtain results with a few idle expedients, rather than with the sweat of one's brow.
I saw a few copies available on ThriftBooks (if you like to mark it up like me!!!) but and also, NYPL and Brooklyn Library both carry it- though I fear there's a wait list and it'd be a lengthy loan.
