Resilience from the Soil Up: Private Philanthropy & Sustainability Leaders Reception
Join a private invite-only tea reception of about 20 leaders from across the Philanthropy, Multilaterals, and Corporate Sustainability – hosted by The Schmidt Family Foundation, Mati Carbon and Clarmondial during the New York Climate Week 2026.
This afternoon reception will bring together leading philanthropists, multi-laterals and corporate leaders to brainstorm how catalytic capital can drive smallholder resilience and adaptation financing, large-scale landscape restoration, and durable carbon removal; while also featuring some of the forward-looking case examples on these themes from the co-hosts.
Context and why this discussion is relevant now:
Two thirds of the world's croplands are already moderately to severely degraded, and on current trends 95% of global soil follows by 2050.
For a small-scale farmers it becomes a loop: poor soil blunts the fertiliser response, so income falls, so restoration goes unfunded, so more fertiliser goes in. Yields sit at 1-2 tonnes a hectare where well managed land gets 5-8. Those roughly 285 million small-scale farmers households globally grow about a third of the world's food but only receive 0.8% of global climate finance.
No market actors can break that loop on their own margin, and commercial lenders won't wait the years soil takes to recover. That leaves catalytic and blended capital to carry the risk in between. Several models are emerging, and this session will cover them.
