Sculptural Dialogues: Hua Wang & Lisa Tiemann

Special Exhibition for Berlin Art Week

On the occasion of Berlin Art Week, this dual exhibition brings together the distinct sculptural practices of Hua Wang and Lisa Tiemann. While both artists frequently engage with ceramics and tactile media, they approach three-dimensional space from contrasting yet complementary angles: Wang through narratively charged, conceptual explorations of global structures, and Tiemann through abstract investigations of material balance, tension, and form.

Hua Wang: Narrative Materiality & Cultural Transformation

Hua Wang bridges traditional East Asian ceramic techniques with performative, conceptual, and digital frameworks. Her sculptures delve into themes of personal and collective identity, consumer culture, and the intersection between natural forms and artificial constructs.

  • Education: Central Saint Martins college of art and design, BA; Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA, Beijing).

  • Focus: Conceptual ceramics, sculptural installation, integration of porcelain with everyday objects and video.

  • Key Milestones: Residencies and exhibitions at the V&A Museum (London), Design Museum Gent, and international art fairs and biennales across Europe and Asia.

Lisa Tiemann: Material Tension & Spatial Logic

Lisa Tiemann investigates different states of relation through the physical and aesthetic interplay of materials. In her signature series, she brings together contrasting elements—primarily ceramics and papier-mâché, but also textiles and rubber—to explore how distinct forms can enter into connection while retaining their autonomy. Questions of balance, tension, weight, and structural equilibrium remain active within the sculptures rather than being resolved. In her outdoor works, Tiemann translates these investigations into concrete and powder-coated steel, extending this spatial dialogue into the public realm.

  • Education: Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin), studying under Tony Cragg; Chelsea College of Arts, London.

  • Focus: Abstract sculpture, material relationships, states of connection, and the interplay of autonomy, tension, and balance across interior and public space.

  • Key Milestones: Solo exhibitions at galleries in Germany and internationally, including SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY; museum exhibitions including the Paper Art Award at the Haus des Papiers (Berlin); participation in international art fairs such as NADA New York and ENTER Art Fair Copenhagen, where she presented a large-scale outdoor sculpture; as well as further sculptural projects in public space.

Exhibition Overview

Presented together for Berlin Art Week, these two positions offer a compelling look at contemporary sculpture—inviting viewers to experience ceramics not just as vessel or craft, but as a site of narrative inquiry and physical experimentation.
