Basic rules and scoring
Before your first time playing, please check out this short video on the basic rules: Watch on YouTube.
We play doubles with rally scoring: every rally earns a point. Games go to 21 (win by 2, capped at 30). With rotation, we may play shorter games to 15.
The serve is underarm, hit below the waist, diagonally across to your opponents' service court. In doubles, the serving side's score decides which side you serve from: even score from the right, odd score from the left.
Beginner tips
Don't worry about looking silly. Everyone does at the beginning.
Call the score before every serve, so no one loses track.
Notice your most common mistake and work on that one thing.
Get your feet moving early. Most missed shots come from being a step late, not from bad technique.
Play the shuttle high and deep when you're stuck, since it buys you time to recover.
General etiquette
It's just a social game for a bit of fun, so let's keep it friendly.
After each game, change it up by swapping partners and courts. If anyone is waiting to play, they get priority for the next game.
Keep score so games keep turning over. Losing track a little is normal.
If a shuttle rolls onto another court, wait until their rally ends before retrieving it.
After the game, tap rackets with the other players or say good game.
Badminton is a physical activity, and there's a risk of injury (for example from falls, collisions, rackets or shuttles). By buying a ticket, you confirm that you're 18 or over, that you're fit to play, and that you take part at your own risk. You agree to follow the venue's rules and any instructions from the organisers.
