About Event

Dear colleagues,

Please join us 29 June for a webinar on remote hearings with child victims of violence, organised by the Barnahus Network and The European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI).

The use of remote hearings has expanded significantly in recent years, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Barnahus are increasingly serving as locations from which children may participate in judicial proceedings remotely.

Although remote hearings may help safeguard children’s procedural rights and enhance participation, they constitute a different procedure from the pre-recorded interviews commonly conducted in Barnahus, and give rise to specific legal and practical considerations.

This webinar will examine the opportunities and limitations of remote hearings with child victims of violence. It will also present key elements from forthcoming guidances, and welcome participant feedback.

Preliminary agenda:

  • Getting it right when preparing, executing, and following up on remote hearings with child victims of violence - Judge Nina Immonen, Finland

  • What the research says about remote hearings with child victims. – Julia Korkman, HEUNI and Åbo Akademi

  • Key elements of a guidance for lawyers - Hélène Paillard, legal expert

  • Key elements of a ground rules guidance - Shawnna von Blixen-Finecke, Barnahus Network

  • Discussion

Who should join:

  • Professionals involved in the process of interviewing child victims of violence, at all stages of the judicial process

  • Children’s rights experts

  • Legal experts

  • Researchers with interest in children in the legal system

  • Others who have interest, experience, and expertise in remote hearings

This webinar is held as part of the E-ViVI project, which is developing tools and resources to support improved digital access to justice, including for children.

This project is co-funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or JUST program. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
