About Event

Please join us for the next Miami Healthcare Breakfast Salon, with special guest speaker Nila Bhakuni of Baptist Health South Florida. Previous breakfasts have explored healthcare delivery, policy, and, most recently, the life sciences industry and clinical trials. This month we go inside one of the most complex questions in American healthcare: what does innovation actually look like inside a large health system?

Large non-profit hospital systems are under constant pressure, from rising costs to workforce shortages to an accelerating wave of new technology. But most of them were not built for change. The organizational complexity alone — clinical, administrative, and everything in between — creates friction at every turn. The ones doing innovation well have developed playbooks that the rest of us can benefit from understanding.

Baptist Health is one of the largest non-profit health systems in the region. Nila serves as Assistant Vice President for Innovation, overseeing a program that spans technology management, applied research, corporate development, and global programs. One initiative worth knowing about is the Knight Foundation Fellowship in Healthcare Technology Innovation. Launched in 2021, it is a yearlong program designed to develop healthcare innovators and entrepreneurs from across South Florida, and it represents a meaningful investment in building that community for the long term. Now in its sixth cohort, the Knight Fellowship brings together clinicians, entrepreneurs, researchers and healthcare leaders from across South Florida to explore emerging technologies and address real-world healthcare challenges. Beyond developing individual innovators, the program is designed to build a thriving, connected community of leaders committed to advancing healthcare innovation throughout the region. The Knight Fellowship culminates each June with a final showcase, where fellows present innovation projects developed throughout the year.

We will talk about how innovation gets done inside a large non-profit health system, what it actually takes to build a culture of innovation within an organization of this size, and what areas, both clinical and non-clinical, Baptist Health is most focused on right now.

This is a conversation for anyone whose work touches healthcare delivery, health technology, or the innovation ecosystem in South Florida.

NOTE: Space will be limited to 30 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-ups beyond that number will be added to a waitlist.

This event is generously sponsored by BDO USA. A light breakfast will be provided.

Nila Bhakuni serves as Assistant Vice President for Innovation at Baptist Health South Florida, where she oversees the system’s innovation program across technology management, applied research and education, corporate development, and global programs. Prior to Baptist Health, she served as director of Technology Transfer at Dartmouth College, where she instituted a new intellectual property policy, and spent ten years as director of Technology Transfer at Rice University, where she also served as interim director of Sponsored Research. She has held progressive roles in technology commercialization at Harvard and Carnegie Mellon. Ms. Bhakuni holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron and Ohio State University, respectively, and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business.
