Living Room Lectures presents Particles, Waves, and All The Genders In-Between
A Queer Reading of Quantum Physics Fundamentals.
Starting in the 1920s, physics, which is the science of everything, underwent its biggest revolution yet with the discovery and rise of quantum mechanics. Often touted as painfully counterintuitive, quantum mechanics raises philosophical questions that continue to be debated today, but it is also the most successful theory of the basic building blocks of our world yet.
This lecture will cover the fundamentals of what quantum physics is, what was so revolutionary about it, and how its attributes that are often labeled as odd are actually just unabashedly queer.
Popcorn, candy, wine, and seltzer will be available. A portion of bar donations will support QueerCare, which provides financial support and care for LGBTQ+ individuals undergoing surgeries.

Karmela Padavic-Callaghan is a PhD physicist, writer and educator from Croatia based in Queens. They are a staff writer at New Scientist and write the weekly Substack newsletter Ultracold. Their debut book Entangled States, a physics memoir, was published in May 2026 by Beacon Press.

Adam Nye is an event producer with a background in informal learning and community engagement across museums, schools, and cultural spaces.
