Financial Risk 101

You've been told you're diversified. You have different investments, maybe different accounts, maybe different funds. But here's the academic truth: if all of your money is at 100% risk, 100% of the time, you are not diversified. You just have different eggs in the same basket.
Real diversification is risk management. How much of your money is at risk? How much is not? And the money that is at risk — that's your quality of life at risk. Is it even logical to take the money that must provide your quality of life and put it at 100% risk, 100% of the time?
It's not. And yet, 99% of the people I talk to are doing exactly that.

Currently, 85 to 90% of Americans are deemed financially illiterate. It's not taught anywhere. And because of that, most people carry a negative psychology around their money that has more impact on them as a human being than their money ever will.
