Moonshots for Metascience and Metascience for Moonshots
The Federation of American Scientists invites you to a workshop exploring the design and implementation of "moonshots" — ambitious, transformative programs built to achieve breakthrough results. Drawing on the legacy of the Manhattan Project, the Apollo Program, and the Human Genome Project, this gathering will examine what it takes to architect innovation at scale in today's policy environment.
This workshop will bring together a carefully selected group of thinkers from metascience, economics, forecasting, and industrial strategy, alongside policymakers from previous and current administrations, to consider the spectrum of reform needed to accelerate science, innovation, and deployment.
Participants will explore a core set of questions:
- What can moonshots realistically achieve, and under what conditions do they succeed?
- How do you set ambitious goals calibrated to the right time scale of possibility?
- What diagnostic indicators suggest a field is ripe for a moonshot?
- What demand signals justify a moonshot as the right instrument for a given scientific and political goal?
