Youth (Spring), the first in Wang Bing's Youth documentary trilogy, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, won Best Documentary at the 60th Golden Horse Awards, and won the Douglas Edwards Independent/Experimental Film Award at the 49th Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
Youth(Spring) focuses on young migrant workers who travel from rural areas to the coastal region, who operate sewing machines, become one of the production cogs at the heart of the world's factory and trade their youth for piecework wages.
Their stories often quietly unfold in corners out of the sight of Chinese mass media and unfound in commercial cinema, where mostly only urban middle class lives are told and remembered. Youth(Spring) presents a way of seeing the everyday of the disprivileged Chinese youth.
The next two films in the series, Youth (Hard Times) and Youth (Homecoming), will screen at the Melbourne Film Festival on August 17th and 24th respectively.
This film has English subtitles and participants from a non-Chinese speaking background are welcomed.
The screening will run approximately three and a half hours and there will be a half-hour optional post-screening discussion.
Sex, marriage and reproduction, work, class, capitalism or feminism, no matter what issues you care about, Elsewhere Books welcomes you to join the community, share (or keep to yourself) your perspective, and experience moments when thoughts spark.
This is a free screening. But we hope you’ll arrive not just to watch, but to participate with intention and care.
We kindly ask for a A$10 registration fee, which will be fully returned as a A$10 book voucher at the event.
It’s not just for logistics — it’s a small gesture, a bridge between the films we see and the stories we read.
Registration is essential.
Let’s meet on time — between film and page.
