About Event

Data from the European Environment Agency shows weather-related extremes cost the EU economy over €200 billion in economic losses between 2021 and 2024. These rising costs are creating a perfect storm as insured losses drive premiums higher and force insurers to withdraw from high-risk regions or sectors. This will have consequent impacts on investors and financial institutions who will be unable to support resilience without adequate coverage. In Europe, 75 percent of the damages related to natural disasters are not insured, according to Reclaim Finance and this protection gap will rise as the costs of impacts rise.

At PRI in Person in October, PRI and UNEP FI will explore how asset owners, asset managers, insurers and other financial institutions are aiming to catalyse investment in adaptation and resilience to mitigate the impacts of a looming insurability crisis. The Principles for Sustainable Insurance will be launching a flagship report at COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, proposing recommendations for policymakers and financial institutions to tackle the widening adaptation finance gap through coordinated responses from governments, insurers, investors and banks. Initial recommendations from the report will inform the discussions.

The event will allow for peer exchange between leading institutions from insurance and investment, across a two-part session:

  1. A presentation and panel sharing the latest insights on adaptation & resilience from across PRI and UNEP FI members.

  2. Round table discussions, with participants split by sector, to identify barriers and opportunities to unlock adaptation finance and narrow the protection gap.

his side event is open to PRI in Person delegates only, and no external delegates will be permitted. Please confirm that you are registered for PRI in Person 2026.
