Building a board: nine types of thinkers
Most boards think carefully about skills, independence and governance requirements when making a non-executive appointment.
But across the last 4,000+ Nurole placements, another pattern consistently emerges: boards are often not simply hiring for skills, but for a particular type of contribution around the table. One board may need a Growth Catalyst to support scaling. Another may need a Situational Specialist to navigate a specific strategic moment. Another may need a Voice of the Stakeholder, a Market Innovator or a Futurist.
This session introduces a practical framework for thinking about board composition through nine distinct board personas drawn from analysis of real board appointments across listed, private, PE-backed and not-for-profit organisations.
The discussion will explore:
How boards identify what is genuinely missing from the room.
Why the same board can require very different profiles at different moments in its evolution.
Where sector experience matters, and where it can become too blunt a filter.
How boards balance governance, challenge, expertise and perspective.
Why some appointments are driven by pattern recognition and judgement rather than obvious credentials alone
The session is designed for Chairs, Nomination Committees and CEOs thinking about the future shape of their board, as well as prospective NEDs seeking a clearer understanding of how boards evaluate contribution and fit in practice.
Drawing on examples from more than 3,000 appointments, the session will offer a more nuanced lens into how modern boards think about composition, capability and long-term effectiveness.

Grace Hamza started her search career at Russell Reynolds Associates, before moving to JCA Group (now Heidrick and Struggles) and then latterly leading Nurole's search execution team. She has lead and overseen 4,000+ board assignments at Nurole for leading Listed, Private, and Non-Profit boards. She has also previously lead Nurole’s board evaluation offering, as well as our psychometric assessment service. She is a trained coach, and currently sits on the board of a large animal welfare charity.
