BREE ST SUNDAY IS BACK!

After a winter break, Bree St Sundays as an open street experiment is officially back from Sunday, 29 November 2026, returning every Sunday until 25 April 2027!

Every Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM, we will once again close sections of Bree Street to cars and open them to people. Whether you're walking, cycling, meeting friends, supporting local businesses or simply enjoying the city, Bree Street is yours to enjoy.

Bree St Sundays is a partnership between Young Urbanists, the Office of the Executive Mayor of Cape Town and the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, with support from local businesses, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), Mission for Inner City Cape Town, the Active Mobility Forum, Open Streets Africa and the Safe Passage Programme. Together, we are using Bree St Sundays to test what can the impact be when the street is limited to private cars.

So, what to expect?

  • Open streets every Sunday! Enjoy Bree Street without through traffic, with more space to walk, cycle, play and spend time outdoor.

  • Bree St Food Sundays from 12 to 5 is back back again. More information will be shared shortly.

  • The Bree Street Experiment. Come and experience our ongoing street experiment between Wale and Shortmarket Streets, testing safer streets through traffic calming, public seating, greening and more space for people.

  • Activities for everyone. From cycling and street games to community activities and opportunities to connect with others, the programme will change from week to week. More will be shared for the 29th. Make sure to follow Young Urbanists on Instagram.

  • Support local businesses. Enjoy the many restaurants, cafés and shops along Bree Street and its surrounding streets.

  • And much more! We will share the weekly programme and activities closer to each Sunday.

This initiative is supported by the Mayor's office and is not classified as an event or a street festival with food trucks —it’s part of a new approach to using tools to create safer streets through temporary installations and hands-on activities to see what works and what doesn’t.
