Last Friday GLITCH: Marcus Byrne
THE ROBOTS ARE HERE (AGAIN)
What Four Generations of Designers Can Teach Us About AI
Marcus Byrne's grandad set type in molten lead; his uncle laid out posters with a scalpel; his father screen-printed posters for U2. Marcus pushed pixels around a screen. His son now draws characters by hand and lets AI animate them.
Four generations, each certain the new tool would kill the craft. Not once has that turned out true.
Marcus has spent twenty years inside the creative departments of some of Australia's biggest agencies: Publicis Sapient, VMLY&R, and Head of Art and AI at Thinkerbell. These days he works as an independent creative consultant and educator, sitting at the intersection of craft, post-production and AI. He's a creative partner to Leonardo AI, ImagineArt and Figma Weave, a board member at AI:OK, the author of four eBooks on creative AI practice, and has been featured in The Guardian and WIRED.
This is an honest, working designer's perspective on what's changing and what's worth protecting. We're grateful for his time.
We'll cover:
Practical AI workflows
Why the tools were never the point
How to keep judgement and a point of view in the process
What twenty years in agencies can teach us about surviving the next disruption
How to stay creative, and human, in the middle of it
No AI evangelism. Just an honest look at what's real.

ABOUT LAST FRIDAY
Last Friday is where curious minds gather. A few simple rules: good people bring good people, no selling, no pitching, no networking theatre.
GLITCH is Last Friday's open stage: how we share what the community's learning with anyone who's curious.
