Journocoders: Investigating with maps using QGIS

​This month we'll be learning how to investigate with maps using QGIS.

​QGIS is a free Geographic Information System (GIS) — a tool for viewing, editing, and analysing spatial data. It can combine information from sources including spreadsheets, satellite imagery, and online mapping services to identify geographic patterns, measure distances and areas, perform proximity and network analysis, and produce publication-quality maps.

​In this session we'll be following a tutorial that covers QGIS as a tool for investigative journalism, showing how to import geographic data, navigate the interface, visualise data with thematic maps, and calculate new values. You'll learn how to use these techniques to identify spatial patterns, anomalies and potential story leads.

​All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event. And if you can, please download and install QGIS from here beforehand.
