Our next breakfast guest is Dr. Tonino Greco — chemist, business economist, and the kind of mind that sees beauty in the darkest places.
In a moderated conversation with Baris Efe (Co-Founder and Head at Vali - Entrepreneurship Hub at ESMT) Tonino will share his journey from researcher to founder with our community of founders, researchers and entrepreneurs.
After nearly a decade at Sony, Tonino spent the last four years diving deep (literally) into the mysteries of the ocean, drawing inspiration from deep sea fish to develop the blackest material known to nature. In 2025, he spun out this breakthrough and founded Scuuro GmbH — named after the Italian word for “dark.” Scuuro is a Berlin-based startup turning nature’s darkest secrets into ultra-black, eco-friendly materials for industries that mimic natural melanin pigment.

About Tonino Greco, Dr, MBA, MSc, BSc
Founder & CEO of Scuuro GmbH, leading the commercialization of melanin-inspired ultra‑black pigments and coatings. With 20+ years of experience across semiconductors, sensors, displays, and advanced materials, Tonino combines deep expertise in materials science with strategic leadership in business development, venture financing, and technology scouting.
Previously Senior Chief Technology Analyst at Sony Europe, he spearheaded global R&D collaborations, startup partnerships, and the award‑winning SAKANABLACK nanomaterials project, later spun out into Scuuro. His career spans senior roles at LG Electronics and Fraunhofer IAP, where he led research groups and secured multimillion‑euro industry collaborations.
Tonino is an active mentor, board member, and jury expert in European innovation networks, with 58 patents, 28 publications, and a track record of coaching founders through accelerators and venture programs. He holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry, an MBA with Honors from ESMT Berlin, and advanced certifications in finance and valuation.
