🏔️ Maroon Bells Weekend Camping Trip

🗓️ Friday–Monday | 5/22–5/25 (Late May Shoulder Season)

✨ Best Time & Stargazing Highlights

Late May is EXCELLENT for dark skies, especially away from Aspen lights.

  • Moon Phase: Near New Moon window mid–late May, meaning excellent Milky Way visibility and very dark skies for stargazing [msn.com], [science.nasa.gov]

  • Stargazing Events:

    • Eta Aquarid meteor shower is still lightly active (peak was May 5–6, but residual fast meteors are possible before dawn) [science.nasa.gov]

    • Best viewing window: 11 PM–4 AM, especially Saturday night

  • Best Stargazing Spots:

    • Dispersed camps off Lincoln Creek Road

    • Quiet pullouts near Independence Pass summit

    • High-clearance forest roads away from Aspen glow

🚐 Where to Camp (Dispersed, RV-Friendly)

Dispersed camping is NOT allowed inside the Maroon Bells Scenic Area—but excellent options exist nearby on White River National Forest land [fs.usda.gov], [thedyrt.com]

⭐ Best RV-Friendly Dispersed Areas

1. Lincoln Creek Road (⭐ TOP PICK)

  • 10–15 minutes from Aspen

  • Flat sites, creekside spots, epic peaks

  • RV Notes: First several miles are fine for vans/small RVs (later sections require 4WD)

  • Near water = relaxing creek lounging + white noise nights

2. Twin Lakes Area (near Independence Pass)

  • Big open dispersed zones with massive peaks + lakes

  • Great if you’re approaching via Leadville

  • Cold but beautiful mornings, excellent stargazing

📝 Rules:

  • Camp 100 ft from water

  • Stay within 300 ft of road

  • 14-day max stay [fs.usda.gov]

🛶 Kayaking & Water Activities

Kayaking inside Maroon Bells proper is not allowed, but nearby alpine lakes are perfect.

Best Kayaking Options

🥇 Twin Lakes Reservoir

🥈 Ruedi Reservoir (Basalt)

  • Warmer water, calmer conditions

  • Great afternoon paddle + picnic

💡 Snowmelt means water is cold but stunning—dry bags + neoprene layers recommended.

🥾 Best Hikes (Epic Views Priority)

All listed hikes are reviewed extremely well and known for knockout scenery [uprootedtraveler.com], [alltrails.com]

🌄 TOP TIER “WOW” HIKES

1. Crater Lake Trail3.6 mi RT
Classic Bells reflections, dramatic basin, still snowy = surreal

2. Buckskin Pass (Partial or Full)8–12 mi RT
Alpine meadows, ridgeline drama, insane valley views

3. West Maroon Trail (Out & Back)Go as far as you want
Deep wilderness feel, rivers, peaks everywhere

4. Cathedral Lake (Aspen area)5.5 mi RT
Jaw-dropping alpine lake, fewer crowds early season

⚠️ Expect snow patches above 10,500 ft—microspikes useful.

♨️ Hot Springs (Natural & Scenic)

There are no hot springs directly at Maroon Bells, but some of Colorado’s best are nearby [hotsprings.co], [seenbyamy.com]

🔥 Best Options

🥇 Conundrum Hot Springs (Backcountry Icon)

  • 18 mi RT hike

  • Unreal setting, primitive pools

  • Permit required
(Only if you want a BIG mission)

🥈 Penny Hot Springs (Closest & easy)

  • Right on Crystal River

  • Free, roadside soak

  • Best early morning or dusk

🥉 Iron Mountain Hot Springs (Glenwood)

  • Developed, scenic, river views

  • Perfect post-hike recovery

🌊 Creek & River Lounging

  • Maroon Creek – Along Lincoln Creek camps

  • Crystal River (Redstone area) – Flat rocks, sun lounging

  • Roaring Fork River – Picnic-friendly pullouts near Basalt
