Adventure Alamanac: Maroon Bells
🏔️ Maroon Bells Weekend Camping Trip
🗓️ Friday–Monday | 5/22–5/25 (Late May Shoulder Season)
✨ Best Time & Stargazing Highlights
Late May is EXCELLENT for dark skies, especially away from Aspen lights.
Moon Phase: Near New Moon window mid–late May, meaning excellent Milky Way visibility and very dark skies for stargazing [msn.com], [science.nasa.gov]
Stargazing Events:
Eta Aquarid meteor shower is still lightly active (peak was May 5–6, but residual fast meteors are possible before dawn) [science.nasa.gov]
Best viewing window: 11 PM–4 AM, especially Saturday night
Best Stargazing Spots:
Dispersed camps off Lincoln Creek Road
Quiet pullouts near Independence Pass summit
High-clearance forest roads away from Aspen glow
🚐 Where to Camp (Dispersed, RV-Friendly)
Dispersed camping is NOT allowed inside the Maroon Bells Scenic Area—but excellent options exist nearby on White River National Forest land [fs.usda.gov], [thedyrt.com]
⭐ Best RV-Friendly Dispersed Areas
1. Lincoln Creek Road (⭐ TOP PICK)
10–15 minutes from Aspen
Flat sites, creekside spots, epic peaks
RV Notes: First several miles are fine for vans/small RVs (later sections require 4WD)
Near water = relaxing creek lounging + white noise nights
2. Twin Lakes Area (near Independence Pass)
Big open dispersed zones with massive peaks + lakes
Great if you’re approaching via Leadville
Cold but beautiful mornings, excellent stargazing
📝 Rules:
Camp 100 ft from water
Stay within 300 ft of road
14-day max stay [fs.usda.gov]
