Placemaking × Tourism

A Quarterly Discussion & Discovery Club

Join us for our third quarterly meet-up on placemaking and tourism, bringing together placemakers, architects, local governments, and destination management professionals, for a session of mutual learning and best practice sharing.

Every last Wednesday of the quarter for ~120 minutes (this time, a bit earlier due to holiday season), we’ll explore the complex realities at the crossroads of placemaking and tourism. How do we balance the visitor experience with the local life? What is the soul, the genius loci, the DNA of your place – and how can placemaking approaches help you elevate the visitor and guest experience? And – can placemaking practice mitigate the negative impacts of tourism? Can we safeguard the unique soul of our cities, towns, and regions?

This time we have a special guest, Cornelia Dlabaja, joining us and sharing about the Vienna Playbook: The Places To Be.

Cornelia Dlabaja is an urban researcher. She is currently a research assistant and PhD candidate at the Department of European Ethnology at the University of Vienna. Her research interests include ‘right to the city’ movements in Venice and Vienna, caring for the city, urban change, migration, and gender. The “Vienna Playbook: The Places To Be” is the central outcome of the Placemaking Action Program. It brings together experiences, best practices, and international examples, showing how public spaces can be designed to be vibrant, inclusive, and future-proof. Developed in collaboration with experts from urban development, research, and practice, it offers a hands-on guide that provides both inspiration and concrete recommendations for action.

Warm Data Lab Format: Our discussion utilizes the engaging Warm Data Lab format, developed by the Bateson Institute.

This structured, free-flowing conversational process encourages participants to explore “wicked problems” and complexity by sharing personal stories, subjective experiences, and anecdotal observations. It’s a refreshing approach that values diverse perspectives over “expertise,” ultimately revealing larger patterns within complex community issues. We’ll delve into the mindsets, tools, and tactics that help us create more welcoming places, for both locals and the guests.
