About Event

Ever wondered what it's actually like to work in medicine or biomedical research? Ever wanted to know how to get into real research as a high schooler. BAYMS is your chance to find out!

BAYMS (Bay Area Youth Medical Summit) is a free, one-day event bringing together Bay Area high school students for a day of real science, real conversations, and real connections. Co-hosted by nonprofits Teens in Health and Formative Minds, this event is designed for students who are curious about medicine, high school and graduate research, or healthcare, whether you're already sure this is your path, or just want to explore what it's like.

The heart of the day:

Hear directly from healthcare professionals and researchers - Through two facilitated sessions, you'll hear physicians and biomedical researchers talk openly about their own path into medicine, what their work actually looks like day to day, and what excites them about where their field is headed. This isn't a lecture, it's a conversation, and you'll get the chance to ask them anything.

A student research panel you won't want to miss - Meet current and former high school student researchers who started exactly where you are now. They'll share honestly how they got into research as high schoolers, what the process was actually like, what they learned along the way, and what doors it opened for them since. If you've ever wondered how someone your age gets started in real research, this is your chance to ask.

Five hands-on lab stations - DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, blood typing, enzyme kinetics, and suturing. No experience needed, just curiosity.

Dedicated networking time - opportunities to connect one-on-one with the healthcare professionals, researchers, and student panelists throughout the day.

This event is completely free and open to all Bay Area high school students. No prior research or science background required. Just bring your curiosity.

Space is limited to 65 students, so we encourage you to RSVP early. We will have a rolling waitlist as well in case the event fills out, and there are still interested students. If spots open up, we will send you an email informing you of your spot! We'll also send reminders as the date gets closer, and we ask that you confirm your attendance about a week before the event so we can make sure every spot goes to someone who can attend.
