Beyond the Silence: Protecting Human Dignity, Preventing Workplace Toxicity and Strengthening Accountability
Every organisation has a culture. Not all of them are safe.
Behind the policies, the org charts, and the professional titles, people are experiencing things that rarely make it into board reports — harm, silence, fear, and the quiet cost of workplaces that look functional but feel anything but. And for too long, those experiences have been absorbed individually, privately, and at great personal cost, while the organisations responsible have moved on largely unchanged.
This Hearthside is a space to change that.
On 29th September, we gather for an intimate, honest conversation with Nancy Kemunto — Lawyer, Human Capital and Governance Professional, Executive Search Specialist, Certified Professional Mediator, and CEO and Managing Director of My Jobs In Kenya. Nancy brings over 20 years of experience at the intersection of people, law, business and governance — and she is one of the most thoughtful and rigorous voices working at the place where human capital meets organisational accountability.
Her work has increasingly focused on the questions that organisations find hardest to ask: What happens when workplace culture becomes a risk? Who is responsible when people are harmed? Where does individual professional accountability sit alongside corporate responsibility? And how do boards, leaders, HR professionals, and regulated professionals respond — not after the crisis, but before it?
As a Certified Professional Mediator, Nancy also brings a rare perspective on conflict, dialogue, and what it takes to create environments where difficult conversations can happen safely and constructively. She has convened and facilitated conversations on succession planning, safeguarding, whistleblowing, internal investigations, HR data protection, and employment relations — and she is bringing all of that experience into this room.
This conversation will explore:
What workplace abuse, harassment, and toxicity actually cost the human being experiencing it — beyond the legal and procedural language we usually reach for
What systems, cultures, and leadership behaviours create environments where people can speak up safely — and what makes those systems fail
The professional responsibility of lawyers, HR professionals, accountants, and other regulated professionals who witness or are implicated in workplace harm
What boards and directors should be asking about people risk and workplace culture — and why most of them aren't asking it yet
How organisations can move from reactive to preventative: building cultures of dignity, accountability, and genuine psychological safety before harm occurs
This is a Hearthside, not a seminar, not a panel, not a lecture. It is an intimate, moderated dialogue with a community of leaders who understand that the quality of the conversation in the room determines the quality of the decisions that follow.
Because silence is never neutral. And the culture always starts somewhere.
